Hi Golfers,
Just wanted to have a quick chat to you today about movement in your golf swing. We are talking about the movement in your hips, weight transfer to the outside of your right foot, weight transfer to your left foot, but forward, not turning left.
During a golf swing when we set up, ready to pull the trigger and take the club back, we are transferring everything to the right side, I’m relating everything here to a right-handed player, so we are transferring our weight back to our right side through to our left side, so we finish chest onto the target. One common fault on this weight transfer is when you swing the club back, all your weight is shifting to the outside of your right shoe, which causes your left hip to shift forward on the way through instead of turning.
So, two things we have to look at, two simple drills. We are aiming to keep the weight on the inside of our right foot. How can we go about doing that in an effective way during a practice session? With your right toe, we will get you to turn that in at about a 45-degree angle. Your back swing, about half way or three-quarters of the way backwards, we will get you to hit some small shots like that.
That’ll assist you with your turn, you’ll really have that locked up feeling, with no overturning.
So, we can go the other way as well, the big one here, we don’t want to slide with our left hip, we want to turn our left side, exit left. How can we go about helping you do that? Narrow your stance right in, two club heads apart, with your front foot, the toe of your left shoe, goes about half way along your right shoe, from there what we are trying to do is turn everything left, exit left, rotate at the hip. With this drill/movement same thing, just half swings, trying to hit little 50 meter shots, just to get the feeling of your body exiting left, rotating left, everything’s got to turn left with this one. It is still fine to feel your weight going to the outside of your left shoe, but just make sure it feels like someone’s got a hold of you at the belt loop with a view to pulling it out of the way, so you can finish chest on.
That’s it from me today, we will catch up with another video in a couple weeks’ time and just remember, the most important shot in golf is the next one.
