TruGolf inaugural “Five Facts Friday,” we thought it would be best to start at the beginning. This week, we take a look at the birthplace of golf, The Old Course at St Andrews.

Golf has been played at St Andrews Links for 600 years. The town where it is located, Fife, Scotland, is regarded as the “Home of Golf.”
St Andrews has hosted the Open Championship 28 times! That’s more than any other venue.
Golf’s popularity has seen its ups and downs in Scotland. In 1457, James II of Scotland banned golf because he felt that young men were playing the game too much. The ban was later lifted when King James IV became a golfer.
The Old Course is home to some unique features, including:
The Road Hole Bunker – an iconic hazard that rests against the 17th hole
The Hell Bunker – a 10 ft. deep hazard on the 14th hole that has crushed many players dreams of winning the Open Championship
One old stone wall that is in play – no relief is allowed when you’re against it.
“The Double Greens,” Seven greens on St Andrews are shared by two holes each.
Because of the Double Greens, there is no set direction to play St Andrews Old Course; but the clubhouse advises players to play “anti-clockwise.”
